Biogenesis {Katie Coffey}
Biogenesis is the idea that life can only come from preexisting life.
Biogenesis is the opposite of Abiogenesis*. It was only just accepted by the science community at about 150 years ago. Ancient cultures thought that "un-living" objects such as meat or iron could, and would, transform into something living such as mice. Later on, it was believed that this kind of spontaneous generation would only occur in smaller organisms like bacteria. The science community didn't accept that life could only come from living things until the 1860's when Louis Pasteur experimented with yogurt and proved that a spontaneous generation could not happen. If we were to take a cat as an example, and we believed that the cat came form another cat known as its mother, we believe the cat was made by Biogenesis. The kitten didn't just poof out of no where.
*Abiogenesis - The idea that non-living material can create spontaneous life.*
Reflection
This wasn't too hard overall. We recently just went over the topic and it's a pretty basic idea. I was surprised to find out that there is such thing as Abiogenesis though. It was a bit confusing to think there are two different beliefs on the same topic, but I guess that's like any other religion. Another thing that was surprising was how people didn't believe that life could come from something living and how they thought everything just came from spontaneous combustion's.

Made it easy to understand a complicated topic. Your response was clear and i understood it. You had all the information
ReplyDeleteI loved your explanation of it, you put it into words that everyone can understand; it was simple and easy to comprehend! When we were going over it in class, I thought it was pretty easy too, I couldn't believe that people didn't think something could come from a living thing either. Louis Pasteur came up with this concept, and he also discovered vaccinations.
ReplyDeleteI liked how you put your information on this blog.It helped me a lot better on understanding this topic.Your reflection was really good the video was good too.
