Plant Cell vs. Animal Cell - Kevin Diaz

Plant Cells vs Animal Cells

Plant Cells vs. Animals is a unit were you learn all the functions of the main organelles between the two cells and you learn the similarities and difference between the two. It is a unit power packed with information but also a fun experience as you get to do a lot of labs that are hands on, also digital which lead you to better understand the difference but also there functions.

Important key terms :

-  Eukaryotic: Organism made up of cells that have a nucleus & membrane bound organelles.

- Prokaryotic: Organism that has no nucleus and lacks certain organelles.

- Nucleus: The control center of a cell that contains DNA inside

- Cytoplasm: Fluid that fills up the cell

- Vacuole: Large organelle  for storing water and salts

- Chloroplast: Carry's out photosynthesis through the chlorophyll it contains which traps the sun's energy.

- Mitochondrion: Site of chemical reactions that provide the cell with energy

- Ribosome: Responsible for the synthesis of protein

- DNA: Genetic information.

- Rough ER: Has ribosomes on its surface

- Smooth ER: Has no ribosomes

- Plasma membrane: The cell's outer membrane made up of lipids & proteins.

- Cell wall - Mains the cells shape & protects the cell

*** Main difference between the two, is that plant cells have cell walls and chloroplast and animals do not have those organelles.

Main differences:

- Prokaryotic cells have a circular DNA and Eukaryotic cells, their DNA is a long thread-like structure.

- Prokaryotic have no nucleus

- Eukaryotic cells tend to be bigger and also are more complex when it comes to organelles

Cell ---> Tissue ---> Organ ---> Organ System ---> Organism

Summary:

In this unit I actually learned that everything you do in every unit will come back up or will some how have ties like some of these organelle will tie up with protein synthesis or have a function that ties with another lesson. I was really surprised on how deep we went in this unit but after awhile it started to make sense because prior to biology, we had just did a little bit related to this uni but the way we did labs and and group activities was a surprise but fun. I already knew some of the functions to the organelle just from prior knowledge from old classes and also know the difference, I knew that one was more complex than the other, vice versa. I like the objective because of the way it was taught to me, the visuals, the videos and all of grasped my attention and made it more fun to actually learn it. The way I could relate to this outside of biology, is a football team going up against a football team, the coaches could be the nucleus which are basically like the big boss and the organelles could be the football players. The differences between the teams could be the skills and players that could relate to the chloroplast & cell wall.
